The very first step to getting your ex-partner back is to identify the root cause to the problems you had in your relationship. However, it's important to know that sometimes what can appear to be a problem is really just a symptom of a deeper issue. It's often much easier for a sympathetic and objective third party to identify and diagnose this. Emotions tend to cloud our judgement and confuse everything when you are in the middle of the situation.

More than often barriers in our relationship are easily fixed, for instance, if you had a communication issue, you just need to approach your partner differently. Further still, other problems may be fixable but involve much more work. Seperation over an issue of mistrust towards you can be overcome with patience while your partner gets comfortable and vice versa. Sometimes a problem just isn't rectifiable through your own efforts. First steps to get your ex back

• Be really honest with yourself, take a step back and really look at things objectively.
• Ask yourself why did the relationship really end? Ignore those heated arguments and hurtful things which were said. What was the true reason to those disputes? Could that problem or disagreement be overcome in time?
• Ask yourself if you really prepared to make the necessary sacrifices or changes needed to fix the relationship.
• Evaluate the relationship. Nostalgia hides a lot. How good were the good parts in reality? Were the bad parts worse than any other relationship? If you could have it all back, would you really want it or you split all over again?
• How well do you (really!) know your partner? And for that matter, how well do you know yourself? Do you have the same life goals? Do you want to move in the same direction? If you did manage to get your ex back today, would you experience the same problem(s) tomorrow?
• Make a list of the ways you would have to change in order for the relationship to really work (don't assume your partner will change at all)
• Add up the emotional and personal cost to youself by making those changes. Objectively, is the relationship really worth the price?
• Finally, make a list of all the things you would like to change about your partner. How realistic is it? How likely is it you could pursuade them to make these changes?
